Blog Week 2

Part 1: Authentic Intellectual Work/Authentic Instruction & Assessment.
Authentic Intellectual Work is summarized by three components, construction of knowledge, disciplined inquiry and value beyond school. AIW differs from traditional approaches of instruction because it involves original application of knowledge and skill.
Here I will discuss a bit more about the three components of AIW. The first component is construction of knowledge, it consists of organizing, interpreting, evaluating or synthesizing prior knowledge in order to solve problems. This is not a skill that can merely be taught, it is best learned through a variety of experiences. The second is disciplined inquiry which is what guides construction of knowledge. There are three steps that need to be followed, prior knowledge base, in-depth understanding, and elaborated communication. The last component is value beyond school. This component to me is what makes the other two components complete. You cannot have any without the other and if you do it is not AIW. Value beyond school is not only something that a student is interested in but also something they learn that can be used beyond the classroom. This is something that I strive to implement in my lesson plans, will my student be able to take what they have learned today or in this unit and apply it in the real world?
In my opinion I feel that as a theater teacher I have no other choice than to strive to create Authenticity Intellectual Work with my students. I say this because one of the most asked questions I have gotten from parents that have students taking theater for the first time is what will my child learn in your class? Other than telling them that they will learn the basics of what theater is, I tell them that their child will learn communication skills, research skills, critical thinking skills, writing skills and more all things that they will be able to use beyond my classroom and outside of school. A great example of that is the process of putting on a show. While we are in the process of putting on a production my students learn to be self-aware, responsible, dependable, decision makers and more. When it comes to performance day my students have to be able to run the show on their own from sound, lights, costume changes, set changes, cues being called to making sure they are on stage when they are supposed to opening and closing curtains and more. If that isn’t a great example of AIW I don’t know what is.
Part 2: 2017 National Education Technology Plan Update
I honestly feel that after our lockdown due to COVID many educators including myself gained a new respect for technology in the classroom. As a Theater teacher I had to find new creative ways to keep my students engaged. I started to use different apps like TikTok, Facebook, Nearpod and Mentimeter in my class almost every day. One of my favorite assignments that I will continue to use in my physical classroom was a Theater History Lesson where my students had to research an influential person from certain eras through history. Instead of just having my students write a paper or create a presentation they had to create a Facebook page for that person. They then had to use their research to fill in the about me section. They then had to post as if they were that person. My class then had to add their other classmates and interact with each other as the person they were. It was great because this allowed students to be so creative. Some would create memes and videos calling out other people that their classmates were portraying and by the way they would respond you could tell that they were doing great research on who their characters were. I think that this lesson is a great example of AWI and Technology working great together.

Part 3: Triple E Framework

The connection that I see between AIW, and the Triple E Framework is that they are both focused on the quality of learning and education. In the example above I can truly say that all 3 E’s were being used. Engagement because they understood what was being expected of them. Enhancement because the students were learning more than just who their person was but how did they speak, what were they really like? Many of these points helped them learn in a new way. Lastly, Extension the students were using Facebook, something they are familiar with in their everyday life and using it to bring their research to life.
